A Niagara Falls champion for public education

Hi! I'm Shannon Mitchell. I'm a mother, community advocate and a long-time champion for public education. I was born and raised in Niagara Falls, and I care deeply about the future of our community.

For the past eight years, I've served as your Trustee with the District School Board of Niagara. Together, we've achieved incredible things — we've improved student achievement, expanded support for student well-being and special education, and we've secured investments in new and improved schools across Niagara Falls.

I've served as Chair of the Equity and Inclusion Committee and also a member of the Special Education Advisory Committee and Parent Involvement Committee, ensuring families and students have a strong voice at the Board.

I'm committed to building safer, more inclusive schools and fighting for the resources every student needs to succeed.

Together, we've made real progress for students and families

Student success means more than academic achievement—it means making sure every student feels welcome, supported, and able to succeed. Together, we've expanded supports by hiring more social workers and youth workers and strengthening our Special Education teams, including the addition of 23 new Education Assistants this school year. We've also expanded our focus on mental health and well-being, including introducing mental health modules into the Grade 10 curriculum.

Creating Stronger Connections

Schools are strongest when they reflect the communities they serve.

  • Chair, Equity and Inclusion Committee
  • Special Education Advisory Committee member
  • Parent Involvement Committee member
Full details

Our schools are strongest when they are connected to the communities they serve. Throughout my terms as Trustee, I've worked to strengthen that connection through service on the Parent Involvement Committee and Special Education Advisory Committee, as well as through my role as Chair of the Equity and Inclusion Committee. These roles have given me the opportunity to listen to families, students, educators, and community members and help ensure that their voices are reflected in the work of our Board.
